The new trailer for The Force Awakens gave Star Wars fans something they’ve been waiting for since Return of the Jedi: clues to what happened to the three main characters after the end of the original trilogy. Many of those clues are suggestive but not explicit, and some are totally baffling if you’re a fan. Here’s what we’ve been able to glean so far:
Luke Skywalker
The hero of the first three films, Luke is mostly likely the narrator we’re hearing in this trailer. “The Force is strong in my family,” he says softly. “My father has it. I have it. My sister has it. You have that power, too.” We don’t know who “you” is meant to be in that sentence, of course, but we do get to see what appears to be Luke’s robotic hand, now a model that looks less humanoid and more android. We also see Artoo, and this seems to hint – if the Force is strong in Luke’s family, anyway – that he’s talking to his daughter or son. Is Rey (Daisy Ridley), the young woman striking an unlikely alliance with Finn (John Boyega), the guy in the stormtrooper gear, Luke’s child? Or Leia and Han’s?
Leia Organa
The only clue we have to Leia’s fate is in the shot over which Luke says: “My sister has it.” But that’s a great shot, because someone is handing down the ultimate Skywalker heirloom to a new generation – a lightsaber, and not just any lightsaber but a very distinctive lightsaber – the second made by Anakin Skywalker before he became Darth Vader and then passed on to Luke by Obi-Wan Kenobi in Star Wars: A New Hope. Here’s the problem: Luke lost that lightsaber on Bespin when Darth Vader cut off his hand. Why does Leia have the lightsaber? Is Rey the person she’s handing it to? Is Rey her daughter, accepting her grandfather’s sword? Because that would be awesome. Also, news from Star Wars Celebration, the fan convention going on right now: no more buns. The cinnamon rolls are gone.
Han Solo
If Han’s not still flying the fastest hunk of junk in the galaxy, I want my money back already. It looks a lot like he is – through the jets of a crashlanded Imperial Star Destroyer, no less – and it looks a lot like the place he considers “home” is indeed the interior of The Millennium Falcon, a little the worse for wear and with a square radar dish on top instead of a round one. The wrecked spaceships are so perfectly of a piece with Star Wars’ vision of a future filled with junk that the Falcon fits in perfectly. Is Han a dad? Possibly! He hasn’t changed his hairstyle, either, though it is trying to get away from his eyebrows, and he’s wearing a cool leather jacket and generally looks ready to swash a buckle or two despite being fully 72 years old. Interestingly, Adam Driver’s character, Kylo Ren, is nowhere to be seen in this trailer.
Chewbacca
Man, Chewie hasn’t aged a day. Doesn’t even have any gray fur.
