Star Wars star John Boyega hits out at The Last Jedi over key storyline

The Last Jedi wasn't just divisive with fans.

Star Wars star John Boyega reprises his role as rogue stormtrooper Finn in the new ninth episode in the saga, Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker , however, he has now revealed that he has some issues with the preceding instalment, The Last Jedi.

Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter's Hollywood Remixed podcast , Boyega speaks about how "excited" he was working with director Rian Johnson on Episode VIII and "enjoyed the experience".

Boyega adds: "I liked the idea of these characters being challenged and separated and stressed, like everyone's just trying to get to each other. That excited me."

However, his main criticism lies with the handling of Finn's relationship with the character of Resistance mechanic Rose Tico (Kelly Marie Tran) in the film.

"But I will be honest in saying... I think that they could have done better with it, especially with Finn and Rose," states Boyega.

He continues: "You know, as a black person, you're going to feel a big type of weight. You had nothing to do with Rey and Kylo... [and] the story just wasn't here for me, with Finn and Rose."

Tran herself was forced to delete her social media accounts following the release of The Last Jedi due to abuse she received from angry so-called fans, but returns to reprise her role as Rose in the new film.

The actress has revealed that Rose has "more of a leadership position" this time around.

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker is out in cinemas now.
