Star Wars Rise of Skywalker review: First reactions as critics watch end of trilogy

The first reactions to Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker have started flooding in following the film’s premiere in Los Angeles.

Director JJ Abrams is at the helm of the final instalment, which completes Disney's latest Star Wars trilogy after 2015's The Force Awakens and 2017's The Last Jedi.

The cast and the crew, including, John Boyega, Daisy Ridley and Richard E Grant, saw the film screened to members of the public for the very first time on Monday night (16 December).

Ahead of the official reviews, film lovers who attended the event immediately shared their thoughts on the final chapter of the trilogy on Twitter.

While the reaction has been more positive than negative, some critics did not hold back with a few describing how “bummed” they were.

CinemaBlend editor Eric Eisenberg pointed out that there are “good” elements in the film, he said there is “more that is disappointing”.

He wrote: “There are a number of choices that just don’t track, fan service that doesn’t work, and ignored details that are missed. I’m bummed.”

However, those who are heaping praise on the film have shared that is the most “hopeful” of the three films, but also called it “dark and scary”.

Entertainment presenter Jake Hamilton said: “I worship this movie.”

Star Wars fan and founder of Legion of Leia Jenna Busch said: “I am absolutely blown away! I’ve never been so satisfied by a film. This is the end of an era and a franchise that has defined my life and this did it justice in a way I didn’t imagine it could. “

“It’s big and full of surprises and, in the words of Luke Skywalker, ‘This is not going to go the way you think,’” said ComicBook.com‘s Brandon Davis while praising the film for its narrative.

Rey (played by Ridley), Kylo Ren (Adam Driver), Poe Dameron (Oscar Isaac) and Finn (Boyega) are all returning to the fold, while Carrie Fisher (General Leia), who died in 2016 aged 60, will also be in the film.

The movie will feature unused footage of Leia, shot when they were making The Force Awakens, and while there's no CGI, there will be some digital manipulation.

The Rise of Skywalker is slated for release in the UK on Thursday December 19 and will be almost two-and-a-half hours long.
