Star Wars: Obi Wan Kenobi trailer offers first look at Darth Vader's return

May 4 is a special date for Star Wars fans and this year Disney+ used the date (Star Wars Day) to release a trailer for its next Star Wars series. Star Wars: Obi Wan Kenobi sees the long-awaited return of Ewan McGregor as the titular character. McGregor last played the role - which was originated by Alec Guinness in the divisive prequel trilogy - in 2005’s Revenge of the Sith. Now he’s back and a new trailer has given us our first glimpse at Darth Vader’s return.

Ewan McGregor returns as Obi Wan Kenobi in the new Disney+ series (Disney+)

When we last caught up with McGregor’s Obi Wan, he famously took ‘the high ground’ against his padawan - Anakin Skywalker, played by Hayden Christensen. Impaling his partner with a lightsaber, Obi Wan watched on as Anakin seemingly burned to death. And so Vader was born… and he’s angry.

In the new series, the mysterious Inquisitors (led by Homeland star Rupert Friend) are tasked with hunting down Obi Wan, as the Jedi protects Anakin’s son Luke Skywalker. Alongside several action shots, we also get a new look at Joel Egerton’s Uncle Ben, who seemingly wants nothing to do with Obi Wan.

The trailer ends with a series of close-up shots of parts of Vader’s body being assembled. We see a shot of a mechanical arm screwed into place, the iconic chest panel being attached and switched on and then - Vader’s famous breathing. In the new series, Hayden Christensen returns to the role of Anakin Skywalker/Darth Vader but as we never get to see the character’s face, fans are eagerly anticipating how he will return.

Luckily, Star Wars fans won’t have too much longer to wait as the series premieres on May 27. The new mini-series also features Rupert Friend, Joel Edgerton, Kumail Nanjiani and Indira Varma and although plot details are sketchy, what Disney have said is that Obi Wan is in for a “rollicking adventure”.
