Star Wars figure sells for astronomical sum at toy auction

Star Wars toys from the 1980s fetched staggering amounts at a recent auction, with a £1.59 figure selling for a whopping £1,900.

The vintage Tri-logo Yak Face model – made by Palitoy – was one of a number of items going under the hammer at Vectis Auctions’ TV and Film Toy Sale on Thursday (October 27). The character was a long-lived Yarkora confidence trickster and information broker who lived during the final days of the Old Republic and featured in Return of The Jedi.

In excellent condition, valuations suggested the figure could go for anything between £1,000 and £1,500. But because of the condition of the item – it had only a minor dent to its protective bubble container and it was also on an unpunched piece of cardboard backing, making it even rarer – interest soared to such an extent that the bidding was finalised at an astonishing £1,900, reports Leicestershire Live.

A playset of the Death Star was estimated to fetch between £400 and £600 when it went under the hammer, but went for an amazing £1,500. There was also significant interest in cardboard too, specifically cardboard that was the backing to Star Wars figures – one set, which included backing for Darth Vader and Imperial Commander figures sold for £320, way above the top-end £60 estimate.

Other standout lots included a vintage Arfour-Defour figure from the Return of the Jedi movie selling for £500 – £220 above its top end value – while a mint condition C3PO figure with a value of between £200 and £260, went for £620. A vintage Tauntaun figure from the Empire Strikes Back also fared well, selling for £170 – way above its £30-£50 estimate.

In a galaxy much closer to home, Palitoy’s other notable creation, Action Man, also fared well. Standout Vectis lots here included a vintage SAS Underwater Attack set which was worth £2.50 brand new, but sold for £200 at auction.

A similarly water-themed Deep Sea Diver set of clothing for Action Man broke estimates, selling for £260. This was way above the £60 to £80 valuation.
