Star Wars Episode 9: Rian Johnson happy if film 'retcons' The Last Jedi

Could the final episode of the Skywalker saga be about to undo the events of the preceding film?

Appearing at CinemaCon to promote his upcoming film Knives Out, the director of Star Wars: The Last Jedi, Rian Johnson, revealed that he does not mind if The Force Awakens director J.J. Abrams undoes the plot developments of the recent episode in the upcoming Episode IX.

According to Screen Rant, when questioned on the prospect of Abrams making such changes, Johnson revealed he wants to be surprised.

Johnson revealed: "Like I said, man. I want to let go of all my expectations, I want to sit back, I want to be entertained. I want to be surprised. I want to be thrilled. I want him to do stuff that I wasn't expecting him to do and just go along for the ride. For me, that's why I go to the movies, you know?"

There was some major backlash to The Last Jedi, particularly regarding some of the scenes which dealt with cliffhangers from The Force Awakens in an unexpected fashion.

Many expected a major twist in regards to the parents of lead heroine Rey (Daisy Ridley), but Episode XIII had Kylo Ren (Adam Driver) reveal they were "nobodies" who abandoned Rey on Jakuu.

Additionally, fans had long-theorised about the true identity of the villainous Supreme Leader Snoke (Andy Serkis), only for him to be killed off before his origins were revealed.

Abrams may decide to reveal more regarding these mysteries in the ninth instalment, but we will have to wait and see!

Star Wars: Episode IX does not currently have a title, but many expect the title and trailer will drop around the time of the much-anticipated Star Wars Celebration in mid-April.

Star Wars: Episode IX is released in UK cinemas on December 19, 2019.
