Star Wars: Disney confirm release dates for three upcoming sequels

Disney have reportedly confirmed plans to release three new Star Wars films on alternative pre-Christmas weekends, beginning in 2022.

The studio will be bringing the as-yet-untitled movies to theatres every other year, beginning on December 16 2022 and continuing the pattern in 2024 and 2026.

As part of the announcement, it was also confirmed that the upcoming Avatar sequel from director James Cameron has been pushed back another year. The film will now be released on December 17, 2021, instead of 2020 as previously planned.

The following Avatar films will then be released on alternate years, meaning Avatar 3 and Avatar 4 will be released in 2023 and 2025 respectively.

The first Avatar movie was released in 2009 and broke box office records by becoming the highest-grossing film of all time – a feat which could yet be broken by Avengers: Endgame.

Meanwhile, the next Star Wars movie, The Rise of Skywalker, is set to fly into cinemas on December 19, 2019.
