Star Wars: Daisy Ridley confesses she wasn't 'a big fan' of the Porgs in The Last Jedi

Daisy Ridley has confessed that she was never a fan of the Star Wars creatures known as the Porgs.

Introduced in 2017’s The Last Jedi, the Porgs were big-eyed, sea-dwelling birds found on the planet of Ahch-To.

But their cuteness has been eclipsed in recent weeks by a new franchise creature in the form of Baby Yoda, one of the regular cast members on the Disney + Star Wars series The Mandalorian.

Asked by Jimmy Fallon on his US talk show whether her allegiances lie with the Porgs or Baby Yoda, Ridley said without hesitation that she finds Baby Yoda more adorable.

“Look, I’m not a big fan of the Porgs,” she said.

“We worked for six months on The Last Jedi and in every interview [I was asked], ‘What about the Porgs?’ I was on the set for six months, they were there for a day.”

In 2017, it was confirmed that filmmaker Rian Johnson created the Porgs to cover up the presence of puffins on the Irish island of Skellig Michael, a real-life wildlife preserve that served as the location for Ahch-To.

In his Last Jedi script, he described the Porgs as “puffin people”, leading creature concept designer Jake Lunt Davies to design a species that were “so cute Lisa Frank will be pissed she didn’t invent it first.”

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, which marks the end of the current Star Wars saga, is released on 19 December.
