Star Wars 9 The Rise of Skywalker to reveal THE TRUTH about Rey's parents

So are Rey's parents not nobodies after all?

Actress Daisy Ridley revealed to USA Today that there will be further material exploring Rey's heritage in the new film, Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker.

Ridley said: "(Director J.J. Abrams) did say the question is answered. So at the end of the film, you do know what the dealio is."

In The Last Jedi, Rey was searching for answers when Kylo Ren (Adam Driver) revealed they were just "nobodies" who abandoned her.

Fans have speculated that director J.J. Abrams will retcon the move by The Last Jedi director Rian Johnson, revealing a significant heritage for the character, with theories ranging from her being a Skywalker, a descendant of Obi-Wan Kenobi, or even of Emperor Palpatine.

Ridley also spoke about the fan backlash to The Last Jedi and its treatment of original trilogy hero Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill), revealing that she expected it.

"I wasn't surprised, no," she said. "It’s just a different thing. Everyone’s going to have an opinion now anyway on the internet, but I also think it’s fair.

"If people hold something incredibly dear and think they know how it should be and it's not like that, it’s fair for people to think they were done wrong.

"It doesn’t mean they were – ultimately, Rian’s a filmmaker and one person can’t dictate how a film is supposed to be – but freedom of expression, sure."

The British actress recently confirmed that she would not be returning as Rey for a future trilogy of Star Wars films.

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker is released in UK cinemas on December 19, 2019.
