Star Wars 9 director JJ Abrams says there's "more to the story" of Rey's parents

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker was always going to reignite the discussion around Rey's parents.

In The Last Jedi we found out Rey's ma and pa were "filthy junk traders" and nothing to do with any of our favourite characters, which was a bit of a curve ball considering everyone thought she was a secret Skywalker.

But after the title for Episode IX was announced at Star Wars Celebration fans think the new film may retcon The Last Jedi.

Director JJ Abrams won't give anything away, but he has now hinted there is more to Rey's background than we think.

"I will say that we knew, going into this, that this movie, it had to be a satisfying conclusion. And we were well aware that that's one of the things that's been out there," he told ABC News.

"I don't want to say that what happens in Episode 8  [didn't happen]. We have honoured that. But I will say that there's more to the story than you've seen."

Are they going back on the last movie? Was it all a game?

Star Wars Episode 9 trailer: Biggest questions after Skywalker teaser

Some fans will be happy at the news while others, who were pleased that Rey wasn't what everyone expected, were not so happy.

The Rise of Skywalker will look back at Star Wars' history anyway as Emperor Palpatine is back, though we don't know how yet.

Apparently it was "always" the plan to have him return as a villain.

"This has been in the blueprint for a long time," said producer Kathleen Kennedy.

His laugh can be heard at the end of the new trailer, but it wasn't a new recording...we'll have to wait and see how he fits in?

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker is released in UK cinemas on December 19, 2019 and US cinemas on December 20.
