Star Wars 9 cast: Richard E Grant, Keri Russell roles confirmed by Vanity Fair

We are about to meet a whole new villainous face in the First Order.

The next instalment of the Star Wars saga - The Rise of Skywalker - will see Rey (Daisy Ridley) and the rest of the Resistance conclude their epic fight against the villainous First Order and their leader Kylo Ren (Adam Driver).

It has been known for some time that Oscar-nominee Richard E. Grant, who is hot off his acclaimed turn in Can You Ever Forgive Me?, will star in the new instalment, but his role was not yet confirmed.

Now the from Vanity Fair has revealed his character's role.

In an image beside First Order villain General Hux (Domnhall Gleeson), we see Grant sat beside him in a similar uniform, on Kylo Ren's destroyer ship.

The caption confirms his role as a fellow First Order leader named Allegiant General Pryde.

The dynamic will have to be seen in the new film, but his sitting in the chair while Hux stands may suggest he carries a great deal of authority.

The shoot also confirmed Keri Russell's role as "a masked scoundrel" known as Zorri Bliss .

It was already confirmed that fellow new cast member Naomi Ackie will portray the character of Resistance fighter Jannah.

It is still unknown who Dominic Monaghan will be playing, but it is widely assumed he is a fellow Resistance fighter.

Meanwhile, whether Matt Smith will appear in the film at all is still being speculated.

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker is released on December 19, 2019.
