‘Star Trek: Strange New Worlds’ is back with a bang out of the Tribeca Film Festival

It has almost been two years since we’ve been with the crew of the Enterprise on Star Trek: Strange New Worlds. But the show premiered one episode at the Tribeca Film Festival and it feels great to be back with our faves!

The first episode of season 3 takes us right back into the battle with the Gorn that left us on edge in season 2. With a voice over from Captain Pike (Anson Mount) that states “This is the conclusion,” the episode begins to wrap up some of the storylines from season 2 that were left up in the air. What happened with the crew that got stuck, was the Enterprise going to be okay, would Scotty (Martin Quinn) save the day.

What is great about this return is that it is, in a lot of ways, how I want a cliff-hanger to be resolved. The show doesn’t simply move on and ignore the questions fans have. Instead, Star Trek: Strange New Worlds literally starts season 3 right where we left off and I think that is “fascinating.”

It is action-packed, thrilling, and tonally a very exciting premiere episode. But this Tribeca Premiere was more than just a season 3 premiere for the show, it was a celebration of the series returning.

Oh how I’ve missed my beloved Spock

(Paramount+)

What has been fun with Strange New Worlds for me is that the characters I love the most this time around are different from my faves when I watched the original series. Not that I didn’t love Spock, I do, but Ethan Peck’s performance as our half human, half Vulcan science officer changed how I felt about him.

The same goes for my love of Scotty. I didn’t realize how much I miss that character until I heard Quinn and knew he was the Scotsman who works to keep the ship floating on. And being back on the Enterprise with these characters who have had three different adaptations of them now has been incredibly exciting. Led by Captain Pike (Anson Mount), the Enterprise is still the best Starfleet has and I love it.

The premiere episode does a lot to wrap up what we needed clarified from season 2 and makes sure that every character gets their moment. But then it allows each character to start to move on to where they’ll likely find themselves throughout the third season. So in a lot of ways, it was a perfect way to kick off the series and get us excited about what is to come with Strange New Worlds.

While there, we spoke with the cast and creatives on the carpet for the show and we cannot wait to see what else they have in store for us all!

We just saw the premiere episode at Tribeca but the rest of Strange New Worlds will hit Paramount+ starting on July 17.
