Star Trek legend William Shatner will go into space on Blue Origin

Star Trek legend William Shatner is going to space.

The 90-year-old actor will be exploring space for real, Jeff Bezos' Blue Origin has announced.

Shatner said: "I've heard about space for a long time now. I'm taking the opportunity to see it for myself. What a miracle."

The Captain Kirk actor from the original Star Trek television series will be launching into the stars on board a tourist spaceflight this month.

The launch is planned for October 12, and Blue Origin's vice president of mission and flight operations Audrey Powers will be joining the flight alongside a crew of four.

A live webcast of the mission, called NS-18, will be broadcast, with coverage beginning from 8am ET on launch day.

The iconic actor's trip into space will mark the second human spaceflight for Blue Origin's tourism and research rocket New Shepard.

The rocket successfully launched Bezos himself into space on its inaugural flight in July.

At age 90, Shatner will become the oldest person ever to fly to space.

He'll take the title from aerospace pioneer Wally Funk, 82, who was one of four crew members on Blue Origin's first flight.

A trip on Blue Origin lasts a surprisingly short 10 minutes from liftoff to landing.

The rocket carries the capsule up past the US boundary of space, at 80km altitude, where the crew then enjoy floating around in microgravity for a couple of minutes before landing safely back on Earth under a set of parachutes.

Following his own spaceflight, Amazon boss Bezos says that the company has sold almost $100 million worth of tickets.

On his flight, he reached an altitude of 66.5 miles, floated around for a few minutes in zero-gravity while playing with ping pong balls, before heading back down to Earth.

TMZ reported last month that Shatner was up for a trip to space.

Sources told the site that his mission will be filmed for a documentary.
