Paramount Plus has revealed a teaser trailer for the forthcoming second season of Star Trek: Picard

The clip was introduced during a virtual panel for Paramount Plus by Sir Patrick Stewart, who first starred as Captain Jean-Luc Picard on Star Trek: The Next Generation between 1987 and 1994.

It was confirmed that John de Lancie, who portrayed Q on The Next Generation, would reprise his fan-favourite role in Picard’s second season opposite Stewart.

Speaking about the character joining the spin-off, Stewart said on the stream, as per The Hollywood Reporter: “Q’s arrival is, as it often was, unexpected. It also comes in a shattering moment in an episode, and I do mean a shattering moment.

“There is significant trauma. There are events coming up in season two that have never been seen before.”

Lancie – who also starred in Breaking Bad – added: “Finally! I’m totally delighted and I’m really looking forward to it and I’m more than ready. I’ve aged a little bit to be more in keeping with where we are right now.”

“I’m here to make your life as annoying as possible. [Q] is deliciously naughty and terribly self-involved so, as my wife says, it’s not much of a stretch,” he said.

Q is an extra-dimensional being of unknown origin who can manipulate space, time, the laws of physics and reality itself.

Throughout Star Trek: The Next Generation, Q and Picard were known to share a humorous relationship, with Lancie’s character often getting on the Captain’s nerves.

One season three episode that aired in 1990 – titled “Deja Q” – sees Q call Picard “the closest thing in this universe that I have to a friend”.

Star Trek: Picard follows Stewart’s character in the next stages of his life. The first episode aired in January last year and received mostly positive reviews from both fans and critics.

Production on the second season is already underway with a release date yet to be announced.
