The cast of "Star Trek Beyond" talk about the latest release in the 50-year franchise.
Chris Pine (Captain James T. Kirk) on playing Kirk: "I always have the most fun on these films when we are laughing or talking. Then the ship blows up and we have to do the ship blowing up acting. I talked a lot with Simon (Pegg) with what was Kirk's trip in this whole thing. Once we landed on the idea of moving out from underneath his father's shadow, that made a lot of sense."
Zachary Quinto (Commander Spock) on the film's tribute to Leonard Nimoy: "If Leonard had been well enough to be part of this film, I'm sure he would have been. I know there were early conversations with him about that possibility. It became important to all of us to figure out a way to honor his legacy. We all carried him with us through this production."
Zoe Saldana (Lieutenant Uhura) on the evolution of her character: "She's tired. She's homesick. I felt that's the one thing I appreciated the most about what (co-writers) Simon (Pegg) and Doug (Jung) did for this installment. They made us human and homesick and sad. The relationship between Spock and Uhura felt so normal and human to me. It's the consequences of loving a co-worker."
Simon Pegg (Montgomery Scott) discusses co-writing "Star Trek Beyond": "We wanted to create a hybrid of the original series with a spectacular event. The thing was to make sure everyone who has been here 50 years gets what they deserve in terms of a good 'Star Trek' film, but the people who have never seen it before are welcome too."
Jon Cho (Sulu) on Sulu being a gay man with a partner and child: "I thought it was a beautiful idea. I had concerns about how it would be received by George (Takei). But it was the handling of it that was the most important to me. Having seen the film, I think it's nonchalant posture toward it is the best thing about it. It's news now, but if you watch the film 10 years from now you won't even think about it."
