The Prime Minister announced new rules for the UK, which included avoiding crowded areas such as pubs, cinemas and offices to prevent the spread of the disease.

Boris Johnson also urged people to avoid unnecessary travel, and stay at home whenever possible.

This Morning viewers were infuriated when the I'm a Celebrity star said: "Of course I'll go to the pub, if I need to go to the pub!"

Asked by Phil what his son would say, he replied: "No, he said we should avoid going to the pub. If I have to go to the pub, then I'll go to the pub."

He then argued: "People who run pubs need a little bit of people, they don't want people to not be in the pubs at all."

Viewers were furious with Johnson's admission, with one saying: "79 year old Stanley Johnson, the Prime Minister’s dad has just appeared on national TV and said ‘If I have to go to a pub, of course I’ll go to a pub.' And the government thinks its advice has been clear."

Another wrote: "It's a shame #stanleyjohnson hasn't followed suit."

A third said: "If you don't think our media is broken - tell me how its sensible to have Stanley Johnson on national TV telling people its OK to go to the pub. Why wasn't this slot given to someone who understands the science?"

"Wasn't Stanley Johnson prevented from doing bucktucker trials on medical grounds but thinks he'll be alright going the pub with a risk of getting coronavirus?" raged another.

This Morning continues weekdays on ITV at 10am.
