Stanford (1-3) vs. Oregon State (1-2) Game Preview

Why Stanford Will Win

So what’s working? In this dud of a season so far, what’s going right for the Cardinal? Start with taking control of games.

The offense isn’t working like it’s supposed to, and the running game isn’t there, but Stanford is great at controlling the clock and the tempo, stalling and slowing down as it holds the ball for almost 35 minutes per game.

The losses so far came against the high-powered offenses of UCF and Oregon, and it got hit with a huge day from Kedon Slovis and the USC offense. Oregon State has a passing attack, but it’s not dangerous enough or efficient enough to take advantage of the reeling Cardinal secondary.

This is the game to try getting KJ Costello going. He hasn’t been able to hit 200 passing yards yet, he’s not hitting the downfield throws that were there throughout last season, and the lines haven’t been able to impose their will. This is the week to try to get physical – the Beavers haven’t dealt with anyone with any sort of power. However …

Why Oregon State Will Win

Now the miserable Cardinal offense has to go against a rested Oregon State team that’s had two weeks off coming off an easy win over Cal Poly. At home, the Beavers should be ready.

The time off was a must to get several parts back up to speed. Top RB Jermar Jefferson and WR Tyjon Lindsey were banged up two weeks ago, but they’re expected to be ready to go.

OSU has yet to beat an FBS team, but the defense is getting behind the line, there’s only been one turnover, and overall, the team is playing far better than it did throughout last year.

The losses came to high-powered passing games, getting hit by the great all-around Oklahoma State offense, and struggling against the Hawaii passing game in Honolulu. Stanford can’t do anything right offensively, and now it has to deal with a rested Oregon State defense that will get to Costello and into the backfield.

What’s Going To Happen

Oregon State is overdue for a nice win. The team really is playing better, it’s got the experience, and it’s got a team in Stanford that’s struggling to do much of anything right. The Cardinal will get physical, but it won’t matter – there’s just no pop to the attack.

Being at home will matter, but the rest will do even more. Stanford has been through a rough, physical first four games, and it’s going to show.
