Stanford sinks Cal as Christian McCaffrey shines

BERKELEY, Calif. _ With tailback Christian McCaffrey leading the way, Stanford took command of a close game and powered to a 45-31 victory over Cal on a rainy Saturday at Memorial Stadium.

The victory was Stanford's seventh in a row over its ancient rival, tying the Big Game record for consecutive wins by either school. (The Cardinal also won seven in a row from 1995-2001.)

McCaffrey rushed for 284 yards, breaking his school record (243 vs. UCLA last year) and the Big Game record (226 by Cal's Joe Igber in 2003).

His 90-yard touchdown run early in the third quarter gave the Cardinal a 24-14 lead it never relinquished.

Redshirt sophomore quarterback Keller Chryst threw two touchdowns and did not commit any turnovers in his first Big Game.

Stanford (8-3, 6-3), which has won four consecutive games, will conclude the regular season Saturday against Rice.
