Stand-off with 'armed' man in Maryborough ends as police storm house

Streets surrounding the area were blocked off by police.

A 12-hour siege at a house in Maryborough, on Queensland's Fraser Coast, is over, with two men taken to hospital, police say.

Officers surrounded the property after one of the men allegedly made threats at 3:35am.

Police negotiated with the man, who had said he was armed and threatened to use the weapons on others.

Officers broke into the house in Adelaide Lane after the man allegedly began lighting fires indoors about 2:30pm.

They expect to charge him after he is released from hospital.

Earlier today police said they were called when the 51-year-old man was heard having an argument with his brother.

Superintendent Craig Hawkins said the suspect had barricaded himself into the home after "confronting" police.

"When police arrived they were confronted by a man with a weapon," he said.

"As a consequence of that police retreated and the man barricaded himself in the home."

Authorities also said the man's brother was believed to be inside the home with him but had been "safe".

"He is not at any immediate risk," Superintendent Hawkins said.

Superintendent Hawkins had said the man had "at least one bladed weapon" but he was "unsure" what else was inside the home.

Police declared an emergency situation when the man allegedly told authorities he had weapons and threatened to use them.

Several streets surrounding Alice Street — including Adelaide Lane, Bazaar Street, Anne Street and Lennox Street — were closed and police were advised residents to stay indoors.

Local residents have been permitted to return home.
