Standing rather than sitting at work can burn up to 50 calories per hour

A new trend is sweeping offices across Bristol - and the country - where workers are standing at their desks rather than the traditional sitting.

Not one to miss out on a fad, I attempted using Varidesk for a month to see if I noticed any changes.

And after the 30 days, I found my back ached a lot less following an eight hour shift.

I didn't dare stand for the entire shift, but I enjoyed being able to lift my desk whenever I started feeling a twinge in either my neck or back.

Aside from being more comfortable, there's other health benefits from ad hoc standing throughout your day.

Researchers have found standing desks help burn up to 50 calories per hour, when used for four hours per working day, that's 1,000 calories per week, or 48,000-52,000 each year, which is the same calories burnt as running over 18 marathons.

This results in a number of other health benefits from lowering cholesterol, blood pressure and blood sugar.

My Varidesk fitted on to my desk really easily and had separate compartments for a monitor and keyboard.
