Stand Up To Racism to hold large demonstration in Leeds Millennium Square in solidarity with refugees

A protest in solidarity with refugees will be held in Leeds this week.

The Leeds branch of Stand Up To Racism is holding the demonstration at Millennium Square in the city centre tomorrow (Tuesday) at 5pm.

The rally comes after Abdulfatah Hamdallah, a Sudanese refugee, drowned while trying to cross the English Channel to reach England.

His body was found on Sangatte beach in Northern France last week.

After the news of Abdulfatah's death, Home Secretary Priti Patel said: "This is an upsetting and tragic loss of a young life."

Stand Up To Racism is now calling for safe travel passages for refugees so they can seek asylum. They say the government is denying them their rights as refugees.

They said: “On August 19, Abdulfatah Hamdallah, a young Sudanese man drowned while desperately trying to cross the Channel and his body was found on Sangatte beach in Northern France.

"Refugees escaping horrendous situations are not criminals. They are trying to get to a safe place and seek asylum, and this government is denying them their rights as refugees.

“This will be a socially distanced event. Please wear masks.”
