Stan Wawrinka’s French Open victory has helped him to climb up to fourth in the world rankings. The Swiss, who defeated world No1 Novak Djokovic 4-6, 6-4, 6-3, 6-4 at Roland Garros on Sunday, has moved up five places and now sits one place below his career best, achieved early last year.
The leading three of Djokovic, Roger Federer and Andy Murray remains unaltered, while Japan’s Kei Nishikori rounds out the top five in the ATP rankings. Meanwhile Rafael Nadal, beaten by Djokovic in the quarter-finals, has dropped from No7 to No10.
Lucie Safarova, the defeated women’s finalist in Paris, has climbed to a career-best No7 in the WTA rankings. The Czech had guaranteed her first appearance in the top 10 after making the quarter-finals and her run to the final has led to her rising still further.
Meanwhile Serena Williams – who beat the left-hander 6-3, 6-7, 6-2 – has stretched her lead at the top from 1651 to 4421 ranking points. Safarova’s compatriot Petra Kvitova now leads the chasing pack, having replaced Maria Sharapova in the No2 slot. The Russian drops to No4, behind Romania’s Simona Halep (No3), while Caroline Wozniacki of Denmark remains at No5.
Safarova’s is now her country’s No2, after she leapfrogged Karolina Pliskova.
