Stan Collymore warns Newcastle United over Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang amid transfer links

Stan Collymore is the latest pundit to warn Newcastle United about a potential move for Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.

The Arsenal captain has been linked with a move to the Magpies after being dropped by Mikel Arteta for disciplinary issues last month.

Callum Wilson’s injury in the draw against Manchester United has left Eddie Howe with a gap to fill in the frontline which explains why the rumours have arisen.

While Aubameyang has a very good goalscoring record in the Premier League since moving to the Emirates Stadium back in 2018, he isn’t the right profile of signing for Newcastle according to several pundits.

In the last couple of days, former Premier League strikers Kevin Phillips and Tony Cascarino have both claimed it isn’t the kind of deal Amanda Staveley and co should be looking to agree.

Collymore has reiterated the points made by his two fellow ex-professionals in a warning to Newcastle in his column in today’s Daily Mirror.

“There are many things Newcastle, a giant but struggling club, need right now but Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang isn't one of them,” he said.

“He'll park his big, gold Lamborghini in the Bigg Market and is one of the last characters you would want in the trenches when the chips were down.

“Perhaps Eddie Howe will partner Aubameyang with Anthony Martial and have the mardiest strike pairing in the Premier League.”

Collymore was no stranger to controversy during his career, but his point does hold value.

There is a reason that Arteta doesn’t want the Arsenal captain in the squad and the last thing Eddie Howe needs in his squad is a player with a poor disciplinary record.

The goals that Aubameyang previously would have guaranteed have also dried up this season and he has missed a number of big chances, something strikers at Newcastle cannot afford to do at the moment.

However, the one benefit of a deal for the 32-year-old is that he is likely to be available, something that cannot be said for the majority of players in the January transfer window.

More than ever, the selling clubs hold all of the cards in negotiations wit the Magpies this month and that could force them into a move for a player like Aubameyang.
