Manchester United should bring former goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar back to the club as a technical director, according to former Liverpool striker Stan Collymore .

The Red Devils are still fighting to secure a top four finish in Premier League - Everton 4-0 Man Utd: 5 talking points as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's men thrashed at Goodison Park on Sunday -  and will be hoping to challenge for the title next season under manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer .

United are expected to bring several new faces to Old Trafford this summer as Solskjaer and executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward look to strengthen the current squad.

However, former Liverpool and Aston Villa striker Collymore believes the addition of Van der Sar to the backroom staff could have just as big an impact.

He wrote in a Man Utd players Ole Gunnar Solskjaer must build around - and who he must let go : "There’s one vital off-the-field appointment I’d be making as well if I was in Woodward’s shoes – because Edwin van der Sar would be the ideal man to come in and work alongside Solskjaer in a technical director’s role.

Ed Woodward must answer serious questions for Manchester United to ever be great again

"Like the Norwegian, Van der Sar knows United well and, at Ajax, he has proved himself an excellent chief executive. I love the way Ajax recruit former players and have long held the view that it is something that our clubs don’t do very well.

"Look at the impact Solskjaer has had at United, compared to the one he made at Cardiff the difference is he had a feel for one club when he arrived but not for the other."

Former Netherlands goalkeeper Van der Sar won four Premier League titles and one Champions League trophy in six seasons at Old Trafford.

He has received significant praise for his work as Ajax CEO and has helped the club to their first Champions League semi-final since 1997, with the Eredivisie outfit beating both Real Madrid and Juventus on their way to a last-four meeting with Tottenham .

Man Utd players Ole Gunnar Solskjaer must build around - and who he must let go

"Having ex-players around Ajax has made the club more robust, and Van der Sar could easily bring all his qualities back to United," Collymore continued.

"He understands the game from a playing and administration perspective, and he understands the financial side of it too.

"All too often ex-players get pigeon-holed as thick, but there are plenty with MBAs who are bright enough to guide their clubs to bigger and better things.

"Recruiting Van der Sar would be a very shrewd move indeed."
