Dec. 31--A stampede erupted during a New Year's celebration in Shanghai late Wednesday night, leaving 35 people dead and 42 injured, according to the city's government information office.
The incident took place about 11:35 p.m. near Chen Yi Square, according to the Shanghai government website. The cause of the stampede remains under investigation.
Shanghai Mayor Yang Xiong visited the scene early Thursday, and the government said victims were being treated at several local hospitals.
The identities and nationalities of the victims were not immediately known. An email sent to a city spokesperson seeking additional information was not returned.
The stampede occurred during an annual New Year's Eve countdown that had been moved to the Bund Origin section of the city, according to a report in the Shanghai Daily.
Nearly 2,000 revelers were expected to attend, according to the newspaper. The celebration had been moved from the Bund, a popular tourist section of the city that sits along the Huangpu River, after the neighborhood was swarmed by nearly 300,000 visitors during last year's celebration, the report said.
