Stamp celebrating Newcastle-built King George V warship and Royal Navy to go on sale

A Newcastle-built battleship which helped sink the Nazi navy's feared Bismarck will be celebrated with a specially commissioned postage stamp.

HMS King George V is one of the Royal Navy's important war ships commemorated in eight new Royal Mail stamps commissioned to celebrate 500 years of maritime history.

HMS King George was built at Vickers' Walker Yard and launched in February 1939. Later that year, Britain declared war on Germany, and HMS King George played a vital role in helping the Allies win the war.

HMS King George was heavily involved in the North Atlantic naval battle which the German Navy's feared warship, Bismarck, was sunk in May 1941.

Renowned marine artist Robert G Lloyd designed the original art work.

Philip Parker of the Royal Mail said: "We are proud to launch our tribute to the 'Senior Service'.

"As an island nation, the Royal Navy's professionalism and prowess has been instrumental in its history, and we commemorate this with images of key Royal Navy ships spanning 500 years."

The oldest ship featured is the Mary Rose, built in Portsmouth, which was in service for more than 30 years.

The newest ship is HMS Queen Elizabeth, the Royal Navy's largest ever ship.
