Stalled talks force UK and France to extend Channel migrant deal

  • The UK and France have agreed a two-month extension to their existing multimillion-pound immigration deal after negotiations for a new agreement stalled.
  • The Home Secretary's spokesperson stated the extension was needed to drive a “hard bargain” for “more bang for our buck”, pushing for increased law enforcement on beaches and more boat interceptions.
  • The Home Office is understood to be seeking performance-related clauses that would link a £650 million funding package to the proportion of migrant boats intercepted by French authorities.
  • Despite the previous £478 million deal announced in 2023, Channel crossings have continued to rise, with 41,472 people arriving by small boat in 2025.
  • Charities and campaign groups criticised the focus on policing, urging the government to establish safe and legal routes for refugees.
