Stalker facing jail after harassment campaign against ex-girlfriend

A creepy stalker who ignored a court order and continued to harass his ex-girlfriend could face jail.

Brian Verbarg showed up at her place of work, yoga classes and sent her a dozen roses on Valentine's Day this year.

He also kept tabs on her with the help of a girlfriend of a fellow prisoner in return for favours.

The 39-year-old pleaded guilty today (Monday) at Glasgow Sheriff Court to acting in a threatening and abusive manner.

Verbarg also admitted to breaching a non-harassment imposed in November last year by contacting the woman.

The court heard the couple were together for a year and separated in June 2017.

Verbarg showed up on at least two occasions at the woman’s yoga classes and stared at her.

Prosecutor Mark Allan said: “She became alarmed and spoke to a friend at the class to walk her home as she was too scared to do so on her own.”

On Valentine’s Day this year, the woman found a dozen roses and a card at her home.

It read: “Happy Valentine’s Day, love the red fern” which was a reference to a favourite book of Verbarg’s.

When Verbarg was in prison last November, a fellow inmate told him that he could use his girlfriend to help contact the woman.

Mr Allan added: “He told her to send flowers on his behalf and tried to get her to go to the woman’s place of work in an effort to find out more information on her."

But, Verbarg then began harassing this woman with messages on social media which were described as “creepy and uncomfortable.”

The last straw for his ex-girlfriend came when flowers arrived at her place of work.

Verbarg told her colleague that he wanted to see her and left a card saying “They are are not from me, wink wink.”

The woman contacted police and they arrested Verbarg at his home on February 20.

Sheriff Martin Jones QC deferred sentence until the end of August for reports.
