Stalin withdraws 90 defamation cases filed against the media by previous AIADMK governments

Tamil Nadu chief minister MK Stalin issued an order today withdrawing 90 defamation cases filed between 2012 and February 2021 against newspapers, news magazines, news channels, and their editors by the previous AIADMK governments.

The order noted that the withdrawal of the cases was part of promises made in the DMK's election manifesto.

The order noted that four cases of "defamatory speech or news" had been filed during that time period against the Hindu or its editor, five against the Times of India, one against Economic Times, 12 against Dinamalar, nine against Ananda Vikatan, 11 against Junior Vikatan, 23 against Nakheeran, 17 against Murasoli, and four against Dinakaran.

One case each was filed against news channels Puthiya Thalaimurai, News7, Sathiyam, Captain TV, NDTV, Times Now, and Kalaignar.
