Chief Minister M.K. Stalin on Thursday inaugurated from Chennai, a grade separator on Madurai-Thondi Road- Ring Road junction. The bridge was immediately thrown open for public use.
The 760-metre-long bridge, along with a huge round-about under it, would provide a smooth and safe passage for vehicles criss-crossing the junction where three roads — Sivaganga Road, Madurai-Tiruchi Highway and Inner Ring Road — pass through.
The construction work of ₹49.75-crore project, executed by State Highways (Projects), that began in October 2018 was scheduled to be completed in October 2020.
However, due to COVID-19 lockdown and a litigation on acquisition of land for laying service road, delayed the work by 15 months.
The Chief Minister had inspected this project during his visit to Madurai in October 2021.
Six-lanes
The twin bridge has got six lanes — three lanes each on opposite directions. The grade separator consisted of 354-metre-long bridge and 406-metre-long approach roads.
Service roads of 7.5-metre width on both sides have been laid for 960 metres along the bridge to ensure safe movement of vehicles.
The bridge will avert chocking of vehicular traffic on this busy junction during peak hours and also make it safer for vehicles uers.
Madurai Collector S. Aneesh Sekhar, Madurai Mayor Indirani Pon Vasanth, Corporation Commissioner K.P. Karthikeyan, District Revenue Officer R. Sakthivel were present. Others present were: Superintending Engineer (Highways-Projects) S. Jawahar Muthuraj, Divisional Engineer Kendriya Devi, Assistant Divisional Engineer P. Kannan, and Assistant Engineers M. Umamaheswari and S. Loga Ganesh.
