Stakeholder plays down energy fears

Ratchaburi Electricity Generating Holding (Ratch), one of the investors developing the Xe Pian-Xe Namnoy dam in Laos claims yesterday's collapse will not affect plans to supply energy to Thailand by February next year.

The firm is a subsidiary of the state-owned Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand.

Ratch chief executive, Kijja Sripatthangkura, said the collapsed dam was one out of five hydropower dams generating power for the whole energy project, so would not affect plans to supply the country with electricity starting next February.

He said the company has ordered the contractor to inspect the site and do what it can to restore local people's confidence.

Ratch owns a 25% stake in the project. SK Engineering & Construction Company Limited, a South Korean-based company owns 26%, Korea Western Power Company Limited owns 25% and the Lao government holds 24%.
