Staggering 92% drop in coronavirus patients in Irish hospitals since peak of pandemic

Ireland has seen a staggering 92% drop in the number of coronavirus patients in hospital, new statistics show.

Tuesday, April 14 saw a total of 884 confirmed Covid-19 patients in hospitals around the country.

However, Health Minister Simon Harris said this morning that the number now stands at just 71, a decrease of 92% from the peak.

Meanwhile 24 people are currently battling the disease in intensive care. This is also a huge drop from the peak, which saw 160 patients in ICU.

Mr Harris praised the Irish public for their progress so far, but said that more needs to be done.

He wrote on Twitter: "Further reduction this Tuesday morning in the number of Covid-19 patients in hospitals.

"71 patients in hospital & 24 in ICU. A reduction since yesterday.

"We think of those who are sick, their families & healthcare staff. Build on the progress by sticking with public health advice."

It comes after the latest statistics show that a whopping 22 counties reported zero new coronavirus cases over the last 24 hours.

While Dublin, which has been the epicentre of the outbreak here, recorded just three new infections over the same period.

The latest data from the Health Protection Surveillance Centre covers the period up to Saturday, June 13.

The only counties to report a rise in case numbers the previous 24 hours were Dublin, Kildare, Mayo and Wicklow.

While the number of confirmed infections in the capital currently stands at 12,213, just three more than yesterday.
