LUCKNOW: Urdu poet Munawwar Rana’s son Tabrez Rana was arrested by Rae Bareli police from Lucknow on Wednesday evening.
Superintendent of police, Rae Bareli, Shlok Kumar, told TOI that Tabrez, who was absconding since July2, was arrested from his residence in Lal Kuan locality in Lucknow.
Police had moved court and sought a warrant to arrest Tabrez after the poet had alleged harassment by the police team which had visited the same residence on July 2 to nab him.
Tabrez was wanted for staging an attack on himself on June 28 to implicate his uncle Shakeel Rana and his son Yashaar Rana following a dispute over ancestral property, the officer said.
“We started a probe after he lodged an FIR on June 28. We got clues from CCTV footage in which Tabrez could be seen conspiring with the shooters,” said Kumar.
Tabrez had hatched a conspiracy to implicate his uncle and his son by staging an attack on himself, following a property dispute, he added.
The role of Tabrez in the crime was corroborated by the four gunmen, Haleem, Sultan Ali, Satyendra Tripathi and Shubham Sarkar arrested in the first week of July during interrogation, Kumar said.
“Tabrez had gone absconding after the arrest of the shooters on July 2. We then moved court and sought a warrant to arrest Tabrez,” the SP said.
Tabrez was charged with attempt to murder, false charge of offence made with intent to injure and criminal conspiracy, he added.
Earlier, Tabrez had claimed to have survived a murder attempt on the Lucknow-Prayagraj highway and had alleged that bike-borne men rained bullets on his SUV. Tabrez had blamed his uncle Shakeel Rana and his son Yashaar Rana for the attack.
Police had worked out the case on July 2 on finding CCTV footage of Tabrez collaborating with the four accused at a Rae Bareli hotel and had also got proof of Tabrez using a different SIM card to call one of the shooters.
