Staffordshire bull terrier found dead in sleeping bag in woodland near Oldham

An investigation has been launched after a Staffordshire bull terrier was found dead in a sleeping band in woodland near Oldham.

A member of the public made the grim discovery in a secluded area off Holts Lane in Lees.

The male brindle Staffie cross was wrapped in a blue sleeping bag. It had a studded collar and lead attached.

An image of the dog has been released by the RSPCA, but the Manchester Evening News has taken the decision not to publish it.

Initial reports suggested it had a head wound, but an inspection of the body found no obvious trauma.

The RSPCA is concerned the dog may have died in suspicious circumstances.

The animal was not microchipped.

RSPCA inspector Catherine Byrnes is appealing for anyone with information to come forward.

She said: "Our initial inquiries have failed to find an owner for the dog so we are appealing for the public to help.

"He was wearing a black harness and we just hope someone will recognise the dog and be able to help identify his owner.

"There is no obvious head wound as first suggested although we are concerned about how the dog died."

Anyone with information is asked to call the RPSCA on 0300 123 8018.
