Stafford returns to Allen Park for workouts after wife’s surgery

ESPN’s Adam Schefter is reporting that Detroit Lions quarterback Matthew Stafford has returned to Allen Park for offseason workouts after his wife Kelly’s recent brain surgery.

At the beginning of April when Kelly announced she had a brain tumor that would require surgery, no one expected Matthew to participate in any football-related activities for the foreseeable future as he and his family prepared for surgery. On Sunday, Kelly reported that she had completed her surgery and was finally able to return home, posting a thank you message along with pictures and video on her Instagram account.

At general manager Bob Quinn’s pre-draft press conference he said the Stafford family asked for privacy and that Matthew’s time away from the team would have no bearing on the teams draft plans. Additionally, as reported by Schefter, the team told him to take as much time as needed this offseason.

We don’t know all the details surrounding Matthew’s return to the team’s facility for workouts but this appears to be a positive sign that Kelly’s recovery is progressing well.

As far as the team is concerned, it’s surely nice to have their leader back in the building, even if it is only during the voluntary Phase 1 of the offseason workout program.
