Staff to take pay cuts as GAA prepares for long run without inter-county action

GAA top brass have said it is "increasingly unlikely" that there will a "significant" programme of inter-county matches by October.

According to the Irish Independent, the claim was made yesterday in an internal memo sent to Croke Park staff, who have been told that due to an expected lack of income from inter-county games, pay cuts will happen in May and June.

"Such prospects mean that the GAA faces a serious financial predicament which, unfortunately, necessitates further reduction of all costs incurred by the GAA including payroll costs," read the memo.

"It is increasingly unlikely that there will be a significant programme of inter-county GAA games before the end of the financial year".

In the GAA's case, the end of the financial year is October.

GAA bosses have decided to avail of the government's Temporary Covid-19 Wage Subsidy Scheme - and a large chunk of staff on the Croke Park payroll will see their income for May cut by 30%.

For those earning more than €38,000, they will be hit by a further 10% cut in June.

Those earning less than €24,400 per year will lost 15% of their monthly income.

Staff were already hit by smaller cuts for last month on a sliding scale of between 10 and 20%.

The GAA are hoping that the lost wages can be recouped, but stressed in the memo that aspiration cannot be fully guaranteed.

However staff have been told that normal pay will resume "as soon as possible" after the Covid-19 shutdown has ended

For May, employees earning up to €24,400 per annum are requested to waive 15% of their income while those earning over that amount will have their wages cut by 30%.

For June, those who receive between €24,400 and €38,000 annually will take a 30% cut in pay while those on more than €38,000 will be cut by 40%.
