Staff say they've been sacked after Cineworld closes Edinburgh Cameo and other venues

Staff at the Cameo Cinema in Edinburgh are understood to have been laid off after its parent company closed venues indefinitely following the Covid-19 outbreak.

Cineworld-owned Picturehouse Ltd, which owns the Cameo and 25 other cinemas across the UK, announced on Tuesday it was closing venues due to recommendations on public gatherings.

Former staff claimed on social media they had been made redundant today.

The company said on Tuesday: “It is with great sadness that Picturehouse is today announcing the closure of all its cinemas across the UK until further notice.

“This decision was made in the light of the coronavirus (Covid-19) outbreak and recent UK government advice, which the company has been carefully monitoring and following.

“The safety and well-being of our staff is our utmost priority at Picturehouse and we are committed to providing a safe and healthy environment within our cinemas.”

We conntacted Cineworld for comment on the reports of staff redundancies.

Other cinema operators Odeon and Vue also closed venues across Britain this week.
