Staff ordered to lie on the floor during terrifying robbery at Tameside shop

A man was punched in the face after standing up to masked thugs during a robbery at a shop in Tameside .

McColls on Ashton Road in Newton, Hyde , was raided on Monday night.

Two men - dressed in black and wearing balaclavas - went into the store at around 9.45pm

They demanded staff open the safe, but they didn't have access, so the robbers ordered them to lie on the floor while they ransacked the till and tobacco stand.

But as the thieves were emptying the till, a customer walked in.

He tried to confront them, but was punched in the face and the two men escaped the scene.

A spokesman for GMP said the victim suffered minor injuries.

Detectives are now investigating, and forensic enquiries are underway.

Anyone with information is asked to contact police on 101 quoting log number 2404 of June 24, or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
