Staff member at Dublin hospital takes vaccines home for family members

A staff member at Coombe hospital in Dublin took a number of vaccines home for family members, a review of vaccinations by the hospital has found.

The unnamed medical consultant took doses out of the hospital to deliver them to two family members.

The Board of the Coombe Hospital released its review into the vaccine programme after it emerged family members of some hospital staff received leftover doses back in January.

The first-vaccines were given to relatives late on Friday, January 8 after Professor Michael O'Connell, Master of the Coombe said that there was spare doses left over following vaccinations at the hospital.

The Board said: “Notwithstanding mitigating factors, the Board accepts that mistakes were made, not least in the decision to vaccinate family members and, in one case, in the administration of two vaccines offsite.

"Lessons must and will be learnt to ensure that similar issues cannot recur."

The board of the Coombe ordered a review of the decision by Prof O’Connell to vaccinate 16 family members of staff at the start of the year.

The 16 doses were administered across eight families.

Nine of the 16 recipients were over 70 and the other seven were of varying age.

Two of the vaccinations in one family occurred offsite.

Professor O'Connell previously told The Irish Time that he "deeply regretted" the incident.

He added that if the vaccines had not been used, they would have been binned.

Meanwhile, Minister Donnelly said it "should not have happened."

He said: "Trust in the vaccine programme is of critical importance and what happened should not have happened.

"Our vaccine allocation strategy clearly sets out a priority list for vaccination - and that's currently for frontline healthcare workers and residents and staff of our long-term residential care facilities.

"It does not include family members of healthcare workers."
