Staff left shaken after Perth shop 'robbery' bid that forced school into lockdown

A Perth primary school was locked down as police rushed to reports of an armed robbery in a nearby shop.

The incident took place at 8.40am at Oakbank Scotmid on West Mains Avenue, Perth.

Staff and pupils were kept inside Oakbank Primary School, the council confirmed, while parents of children at Perth High School where also alerted.

A spokesperson from Perth and Kinross Council said: “All pupils and staff were kept inside Oakbank Primary School as a precaution this morning due to a police incident.

“It would be inappropriate to comment further on a live investigation.”

Perth High School parents were also made aware of the worrying situation via a tweet from the school at 11am.

It read: “We are aware that there has been an incident this morning in the Oakbank area causing concern in the local community.

“Police have informed us this incident has been brought to a conclusion.”

It is understood there was no danger to school children but police liaised with the schools as a precaution.

Within two hours of the incident, the council said school routine was “back to normal”.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “Around 8.40am on Wednesday, June 14, officers received a report of an attempted robbery at a premises on West Mains Avenue, Perth.

“A 40-year-old man has been arrested and charged in connection with the incident.”

A Scotmid spokeswoman said: “All staff were shaken by the events that took place earlier today. They are receiving full support. We are working with Police Scotland as they investigate the incident.”
