Staff baffled after thief steals signage from children's nursery

Nursery staff said they thought they were 'seeing things' when they arrived at work to find their business sign had been stolen.

Workers at Little School Montessori Nursery discovered the theft when they arrived on Monday morning. The nursery, on King Street in Wallasey, only opened at the beginning of March, with the sign costing more than £1000 to design and install.

Police reported a man was seen at 6.30am that morning, stealing both the sign and a bin, but no arrests have been made.

Cait McArdle, 21, deputy manager at the nursery, said: "We opened on 3 March, so we're still new and we're working so hard. We're working 23 out of 24 hours a day to try and get things moving along, then someone just comes and takes all our hard work away from us basically.

"I thought I was seeing things, when I first got there I just felt that there was something missing, that something wasn't right. As I was opening up I was thinking what is it that's missing and then I took a step back and noticed the bin had gone and then double-took when I saw the sign had gone too.

"[The people who made the sign] came out and had a look at it, and said this isn't an accident, someone's unscrewed it as there's no damage to the base of the sign. If the wind had blown it off it would've been damaged where the screws were but there was no damage at all.

"I've got no idea who would do such a thing. It baffles me, I'm trying to figure it out still. I really don't understand it. What would the purpose be in stealing a nursery's sign?'

"It's not something that's easily replaceable or cheap but it's of no use to anyone but us. It doesn't make sense."

The nursery was forced to close for the day as police carried out investigation work into the theft. Cait continued: "We’d like to thank everyone in our community that has helped us or reached out to help in any way. It hasn’t gone unnoticed and it’s very appreciated."
