Staff at Nottinghamshire school isolate following contact with pupil who tested positive for Covid-19

A number of staff members at a Nottinghamshire school are self-isolating after coming into contact with an individual who has tested positive for coronavirus.

A "small number of staff" at Sutton Community Academy must isolate for 14 days to avoid any further spread of the virus and have been informed by the school to stay at home.

In a letter on its website, the school previously informed parents and carers on October 6 that a pupil had tested positive for Covid-19 on October 5, but the school had been informed by the Department for Education that no further action was needed.

In the latest correspondence sent out to parents, the Sutton-in-Ashfield school has said it remains open to pupils who should attend if they are well.

A statement on the Sutton Community Academy website read: "We have been made aware of a member of our school community who have tested positive for Covid-19.

"We know that you may find this concerning but we are continuing to monitor the situation and are working closely with Public Health England.

"The small number of staff who have been in close contact with the individual who has tested positive for coronavirus (Covid-19) have received a letter informing them that they must stay at home for 14 days.

"The school remains open and your child should continue to attend as normal if they remain well."

Six days before on October 5, in a letter to parents of the school's pupils, principal Mary Cox said: "We had a notification from the family of a student who tested positive for Covid-19.

"I contacted the Department for Education (DfE) schools helpline on the morning of October 6 to take advice on how we should respond to this situation.

"Since the student was only diagnosed with Covid-19 on Monday morning, and didn’t have any symptoms until early that morning, the advice is that there is no further action to take at this point.

"The DfE advice is that people with the virus are only infectious in the two days prior to the onset of symptoms, which in this case would have been over the weekend.

"The student was not in school on Monday, October 5. In order to reassure parents, I contacted the experts again on Monday afternoon and the same advice was provided to me.

"I realise that this is a development that will cause some concern, but as we have been doing from the very beginning of the Covid-19 situation, we are following the Government advice and guidance, through maintaining bubbles, conducting enhanced cleaning throughout the school and providing hand sanitiser in every classroom and around the building."

More than 60 schools in Nottinghamshire have now reported coronavirus cases.
