Staff at Lockerbie's Cumberland Building Society gearing up to become "last bank in town

Staff at Lockerbie’s Cumberland Building Society branch are gearing up to become the “last bank in
town”.

They held an open day to outline how they’ll help new customers open or transfer accounts when the Bank of Scotland closes its High Street outlet on August 8.

The Royal Bank of Scotland and Santander have pulled out of the town in previous years.

Dumfriesshire MP David Mundell was invited to the CBS open day.

He heard how the society, whose branch is open three days a week, offers a full range of banking services over the counter.

Mr Mundell said: “I’m grateful to the Cumberland for their commitment to keep an office in Lockerbie as long as it remains viable to do so.

“I believe that it provides a convenient alternative option for local people who prefer face-to-face banking.

“Although a building society, the Cumberland offers the full range of services, including digital banking, that would be available at branches of large national and international banks.

“They currently see a good future for their Lockerbie branch although that, of course, depends on customer support.”

Mr Mundell pointed out that certain other banking facilities remain available at the town’s Post Office which operates on the High Street.
