Staff at Harrop Fold School in Salford have tested positive for coronavirus - but it's staying open

Harrop Fold School in Salford has undergone a thorough clean after two members of staff tested positive for Covid 19.

The staff concerned, as well as colleagues and children who may have been in contact with them, have been told to self-isolate.

But health and education bosses have decided the school is safe enough to open as usual on Monday to the children of key workers.

The two positive tests were confirmed on Friday when the principal of the school, Claire Wright, was away from the school 'for personal reasons'.

She had been granted unpaid leave by education bosses.

The school in Little Hulton was made famous by Channel 4 fly-on-the-wall documentary Educating Greater Manchester.

But it was taken under the wing of the United Learning academy trust after being put into special measures by Ofsted in 2018.

The secondary was deemed 'inadequate' in all five inspection areas by the watchdog n 2018.

C4 bosses have confirmed that the second series of Educating, filmed during the tumultuous period when previous head Drew Povey was suspended, will not be aired in light of the Ofsted findings. Mr Povey later quit.

The first positive Covid 19 test was confirmed on Thursday night followed by a second on Friday.

In a statement, Coun John Merry, Deputy City Mayor and lead member for Children’s and Young People’s Services in Salford, said: "The head teacher of Harrop Fold School had permission to take Friday off on unpaid leave for personal reasons but was in constant contact with the school during the day.

"Unfortunately two members of staff have tested positive. The head teacher had not been in physical contact with either staff member.

"Following advice from Public Health England (PHE) those staff and children who have been in possible contact with them have been advised to self isolate. These are limited in number due to the fact that the school is only currently open to a small number of students and staff.

"The situation was managed on Friday with the decision to stay open taken by senior members of staff, including the head teacher in liaison with Salford City Council and PHE.

"Following PHE advice, the school will be suitably cleaned and remain open as usual on Monday for the appropriate priority groups such as children of key workers."

The M.E.N. has contacted Ms Wright for a comment.
