Staff at Centre 1 in East Kilbride sent home from office

Staff at Centre 1 in East Kilbride have been sent home today after a burst pipe.

Workers were turned away from their office upon arriving on Monday after pipes burst over the weekend.

A source told the News:“We have been told we can work from home or take a day’s annual leave.

“This isn’t the first time we’ve been sent home once getting to work – there has been problems for a while and it really needs sorted.

“It’s usually problems with the heating.”

An HMRC spokesman told the News that, whilst the issue has been resolved, the building will remain closed on Monday to “allow temperatures to return to normal”.

Following the issue, it is hoped Queensway House will reopen tomorrow.

The spokesman added: “We can confirm there was a heating issue at Queensway House and engineers have resolved the problem.

Great news for people in EK regarding COVID vaccinations

“The overwhelming majority of our staff in East Kilbride are working from home due to the pandemic, but we anticipate the building will re-open tomorrow.”

Last February staff were sent home after heating in the massive building packed in. And that wasn’t the first time staff had to wrap-up.

In January 2018 - when East Kilbride was hit by a big freeze and temperatures plummeted to as low as -7C overnight – staff were sent home.

But there were complaints from some staff saying they had to work in “baltic conditions” before the office eventually closed.

The ‘Stay in EK’ Campaign - spearheaded by the Public and Commercial Services Union and backed by the East Kilbride News - is battling to save nearly 3000 jobs which were due to be moved to a regional centre in Glasgow by 2026 under restructuring plans.

However, with the COVID pandemic and change of working opportunities that has thrown up, it is unclear as to how those plans will pan out.
