Staff at Australian High Commission in South Africa sacked for visa fraud

Two immigration officials from the Australian High Commission in South Africa have been sacked for visa fraud.

The two locally engaged staff at the Australian High Commission in Pretoria allegedly issued illegal visas to high-risk Nigerian students.

A joint investigation by the Australian Commission for Law Enforcement Integrity and Border Force found 21 visas issued between February and April 2017 were suspect.

The two visa officials were dismissed, but no charges have yet been laid.

Several of the suspect visas were reviewed and some were cancelled.

A 30-year-old Nigerian nursing student, who had her visa cancelled, had the decision overturned by the Administrative Appeals Tribunal on May 17.

The Australian High Commission in Pretoria issues up to 40,000 visas each year.
