Stadium of Light hints at Elton John 'Farewell Yellow Brick Road' tour date next summer

Sir Elton John looks set to perform at Sunderland's Stadium of Light next summer as part of his farewell tour.

The pop legend is retiring at the end of an epic tour titled the 'Farewell Yellow Brick Road' which is seeing him play more than 300 concerts across the globe.

Sir Elton revealed on his Twitter account last week that he was going to make a "major tour announcement" on Wednesday (June 23).

Now the Stadium of Light official Twitter account has strongly hinted that the 74-year-old will be coming to the North East.

A post reads: "Live music is returning to the North East next summer!" accompanied by a picture of the Stadium of Light with Elton John's 'E' logo emblazoned on the pitch.

The prolific songwriter is expected to stage what will be an eagerly anticipated Sunderland tour date on June 19, 2022.

Sir Elton will play a long list of his greatest ever hits, from 'Your Song' to 'Tiny Dancer' and 'Rocket Man'.

The 'Farewell Yellow Brick Road' tour began in September 2018 and was a hit with fans and critics alike before Sir Elton was forced to postpone as a result of the coronavirus pandemic.

The tour is expected to resume on September 1 in Berlin.

Sir Elton will perform across the UK and Ireland from October to December before crossing the Atlantic.

However, he is now expected to return for more concerts in Britain next year, including the Sunderland date.

The final date on the tour is January 28, 2023 in Auckland, New Zealand. That was rescheduled from January 2021.

Sir Elton said he wanted to retire from touring so he could spend more time with husband David Furnish and their two sons, Zachary and Elijah.
