A man was left fighting for his life after being stabbed in a bust-up after house party.
Callum Smith plunged a military-style combat blade into Kieran Gemmell when he attacked him in the street in the early hours of the morning.
Paisley Sheriff Court heard last week the victim needed life-saving surgery for a horrific injury on the left side of his stomach.
Smith was jailed for three years after pleading guilty to assaulting Mr Gemmell to his severe injury and endangering his life, the Paisley Daily Express reports.
The court heard Mr Gemmell was drunk and behaving aggressively, causing guests to leave the party in Houston Street, Renfrew on June 24 last year.
However, Smith attacked him in the street outside when he produced "a black serrated army knife" and plunged it through his abdomen.
Mr Gemmell was left with a puncture wound to the left side of his abdomen, eight to ten inches long.
He was rushed to the Royal Alexandra Hospital.
Procurator fiscal depute David McDonald said: "Had he not received medical intervention, there is a high probability that he would have succumbed to his injuries."
Defence agent Bob Mitchell said his client, who is a first offender, displayed the "highest level of remorse" for his actions.
He said: "He understands that custody will be inevitable because of the seriousness of the matter.
"He did something very wrong.
"He clearly has shown the highest level of remorse, and this process has had a fundamental impact on him."

Mr Mitchell added Smith had pleaded guilty to the attack at the earliest opportunity and asked the court to take this into account in sentencing him.
Passing sentence Sheriff Mark Thorley told him: "I am sure you understand the gravity of what happened here.
"You had the weapon before becoming involved in the altercation.
"In my view, there is no alternative other than custody in sentencing you."
Sheriff Mark Thorley, who had studied background reports prior to handing him his punishment, told him: "I understand that you are remorseful."
However, he added were it not for his early plea of guilty, he would have handed him four years.
Smith was sentenced to three years behind bars.
