St Peter’s boss Paul McTaggart is adamant there’s still plenty of time for the Paisley club to mount a serious title challenge.
The Glenburn side move up to fourth spot in Division 4 after pulling off a scintillating 8-0 thrashing of BSC Glasgow at New Western Park.
The welcome win put an end to a disappointing three-game losing streak that had looked to put St Peter’s table-topping aspirations in danger.
McTaggart insists his side have still got every chance of winning the league having only just played their eighth game of the campaign.
He told Express Sport: “I’d said before the game that someone would get a drubbing from us when it all came together and on Saturday it did.
“With no midweek game, we had the whole week to prepare which I think made a big difference.
“We changed a couple of positions up, the biggest being moving young Jay Lunny into a more central position to get on the ball more and he was phenomenal.
“That was our first win in four having suffered a couple of last-minute defeats. We still took the positives from those losses and on Saturday our concentration was much better and so were our transitions.
“We’ve still got aspirations of finishing top of this division. We’re not just in it to make up the numbers.
“We want to finish in that number one spot and we’ve got games in hand on the teams above us at the moment.
“We’ve also still got to play each other three more teams, so there’s plenty of points still up for grabs.
“That win jumped us up three places and it’s far too early to rule any of the top six teams out of the running at this point.”
St Peter’s are now just one point behind Paisley rivals Glenvale in the table, with a game in hand on their neighbours who they’ve beaten in both of their meetings this season.
McTaggart insists there’s only a friendly rivalry between the two sides, who have both stepped up to senior level this season, but admits he still wants to finish above John Kelly’s side and everyone else in the division.
McTaggart said: “The team is playing really well at the moment and the progression we’re making is clear to see.
“We’re improving all the time and the boys are working so hard so it’s credit to them for taking on board everything we’re asking of them.
“That was the biggest win in the league so far of any team, which shows other teams we’re dangerous.
“It’ll maybe put a marker out for us and we’ve got to work hard to maintain that respect.
“We have a friendly rivalry with Glenvale, who are similar to us in terms of trying to bring through their youngsters into a senior team. We respect that a lot.
“If it’s Glenvale, Finnart or Kilsyth Atheltic above us though, we’ll be hunting them down just the same.
“We want to be the best in the division when all is said and done.”
