St Pauls Carnival director 'over the moon' after dramatic drop in crime rate at festival

The director of St Pauls Carnival says she is "over the moon" after safety measures in place at this year's event led to a dramatic year-on-year reduction in crime.

Around 100,000 people attended the celebration of African-Caribbean culture on July 6, with just 26 offences reported — 10 fewer than last year.

Executive director LaToyah McAllister-Jones said: "Last year was relatively successful in terms of managing the crowd numbers, but this year was even safer.

"We are over the moon. Our crowd management plan was central to the safety operation, making sure nowhere got too overcrowded.

"It was about making sure we had the right traders in the right places, and looking at the capacity of places like Portland Square and Brunswick Square," she added.

"We had soundsystems playing inwards rather than outwards at places like the Malcolm X Centre. A little thing like that can really affect the dynamic of the crowd."

Offences at this year's event include four arson or criminal damage incidents, nine violence against the person offences and seven thefts.

There were also two drug offences, one sexual offence and three public order offences, one of which was racially aggravated.

A 43-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of a racially aggravated public order offence in Ashley Road on July 6. He has been bailed by police until August 7.

Ms McAllister-Jones said: "An incident like that is disappointing. The carnival is a celebration of African heritage and culture.

"We are really, really pleased with the feedback this year on the inclusivity of the event."
